Herbal Medicine

On our planet earth, humans and herbal medicine have co-evolved.  Seeds, roots, flowers, leaves, bark, bones, shells, insects and animals have provided food and medicine since the beginning of time.

Whether from Hippocrate’s teachings or from historic inscriptions on stone, traditional wisdom is grounded in the understanding that food can be our medicine. The art and science of herbal medicine, handed down from generation to generation, has developed through gathering, compilation, formulation and testing. In Asia, ancient Daoist monks left detailed records of Elixirs supporting health and longevity. The earliest known writings are attributed to Shen Nung from 3494 B.C.

Traditional Chinese medical theory, teaches us to treat both “the Root and the Branch.” The Root is the underlying cause of a disharmony and “the branches” are the resulting symptoms. Instead of treating a disease, each individual’s whole constitution and presenting health patterns are addressed to establish harmony in the body. Herbs and foods are recommended based on their flavor (bitter, sour, sweet, pungent and salty) and their energetic nature and functions (warming, cooling, tonifying, purging, calming or invigorating) which affect the systems of the body. Herbs are combined in a formula, to create a unique, synergistic balance, minimizing any side effects and increasing the benefits.
